Richard Roland Waddell, 84, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at the John F. Keever Solace Center. He was born In Statesville, NC to the late James Waddell Sr. and Vermont Carr Waddell. At a very young age, the family moved to Asheville, NC.
Roland received his education through the Asheville City School system. At an early age, Roland was baptized at St. John A. Baptist Church of Asheville. He was an Army veteran and and received a honorable discharge. Upon discharge, he went to New York City and became a professional boxer under the leadership of the late great Sugar Ray Robinson. He was quite successful until an injury ended his career.
Roland was preceded in death by sisters, Thelma Vines, Gertrude Rucker and Christine Morrison; brothers, Paul, William and Walter Waddell.
Left to cherish his memory are sisters, Sarah Wilcher, Marjorie Beard, Portia Leverette and Kokeeta Cave; brothers, James and Eddie Waddell; many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held 2:30 PM, Thursday, March 26, 2020, with burial in the family plot at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. Rev. Dr. John H. Grant performed the committal service.
Jesse Ray folded the U S flag and presented it to Sarah Wilcher in honor and recognition of Roland's military service.
Because of governmental restrictions on public gatherings due to the coronavirus pandemic, a Celebration of Life Service for family and friends will be held at a later date.
