Richard Marshall Howard, 70, went to be with the Lord December 30, 2020. He was born January 20, 1950 in Lucedale, MS to the late Pauline Banks Howard and Percy Howard. He enlisted in the Marine Corp at the age of nineteen and fought in the Vietnam War. He was wounded in combat and received a Purple Heart medal for commendable bravery in 1971. Richard was honorably discharged in 1975.
He was employed at the Charles George VA Medical Center and retired after 30 years of service. Richard loved traveling the world. His grand-daughter, Janiah, affectionately calls him the “G.O.A.T”.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Carolyn” Coochie” Salters-Howard; brother, Paul Howard; sister, Virginia Howard.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Travis Salters, Tangela Salters and Jamie Howard; grandchildren, Shakeya Green (John), Tiara Blair, Treonna Salters, Janiah Sanders and Jahmir Richard Howard; great-grandchild, Kayana Bass; sisters, Melva Marie Howard and Catherine Foster; brothers, Percy Howard, Jr., Arthur Howard and Clarence Howard; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was a loving son, brother, father and friend to many.
Public viewing will be from 2:00-6:00 pm Tuesday, January 5, 2021 in the chapel of Ray Funeral & Cremation Service. Funeral service will be 11:30 am Wednesday, January 6, 2021 also in the chapel. Burial will follow at 1:00 pm at the WC State Veterans Cemetery. Burial will follow the service at Lewis Memorial Park. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, attendance will be limited to 50. Attendees must wear a face covering, sanitize hands and social distance.
