When you think of an incredible host, you typically think of someone that waits on you, shows you a great time, and delivers an awesome experience you’ll never forget… Well our father, friend, brother, uncle, husband, and pawpaw exhibited all of these features, developed by a strong family foundation that everyone experienced from the beginning of his life.
Otis Russell Suber was the beautiful creation of the late Johnny and Doretha Francis Suber. His parents established a strong family foundation that Otis carried on throughout lifetime. His strong family love and heritage would be passed on to all those in the family who came after him. This affection for the family will keep the love going strong, just as Otis would have wanted. Otis was at his home on Thursday, February 4, 2021 when he peacefully passed and joined his son Andre King who preceded him.
Otis, “Oogie” as he was fondly known, was a native of Asheville, NC. Everyone knew Oogie for his openness to bringing his family and friends together through celebrations and holidays. Oogie’s passion for service was developed by attending the Buncombe County school system and later driving busses for the city and school transit system. Through his experiences and stable foundation, he established his career to include being a former employee of Reynolds High School, AB Tech College, Givens Estates and most recently Arbor Terrace Assisted Living Center. Bringing laughs and smiles to both children and the senior citizens he thoroughly enjoyed working with, Oogie was beloved and adored by everyone he met. Oogie was able to bring joy and share everlasting feelings throughout all his work.
Oogie was an avid sports fan and cheered for his favorite teams like the Carolina Panthers, Tar Heels and Atlanta Braves. Oogie was hardworking and dependable, lending a hand in whatever way he could for everyone. Never meeting a stranger, he connected to the young and old alike, making everyone feel like family. He enjoyed traveling and entertaining family and friends at his home, where a crab-boil was right around the corner!
Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife, Brenda Young Suber; sons, Brian Suber (Sabrina), Russell Suber (Brittany) and Tyron Young; daughters, Donna Suber, Lisa Morton, Larissa Young (LaRisha); and special daughter LaPatra Bowen; brothers, Johnny Suber, Jr., (Rebecca) and Larry Suber (Dawn); sisters, Diane Suber Davis (Willie), Janet Suber and Marthreen Suber; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces.
With the knowledge and experience of how to be the best host alive, from years of watching Oogie show us all how to do it right, the family members will be able to pass down his teachings to future Subers. Through the living members of his family, we know that Oogie’s purpose of helping and serving other people will continue for generations to come, and his legacy has not ended, but will live on for centuries to come.
