On Thursday, September 3, 2020 Norene Thelma Conley was called home to the heavens at the age of 87 in Asheville, NC. She was predeceased by her husband Thomas Lee Conley, parents Elder Elja Van Buren and Willie Irene Roberson, sister Classie Gantt and twin sister Irene Holifield.
Norene was born on June 4, 1933 in Yuma, Arizona. After completion of high school, she and her twin sister Irene moved to Phoenix, AZ to attend nursing school at Memorial Hospital. After becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) she practiced nursing for nearly 40 years. She worked at Mission Hospital and retired from Oteen Veterans Hospital in Asheville, NC. She was married to the love of her life, Thomas (Jimmie) Conley for 58 years until his passing in 2015.
Norene is survived by sons: Kevin Conley of Asheville, NC and James (Andrea) Conley of Smithfield, NC and stepson Russ (Sylvia) Conley of Durham, NC; daughters: Dionne Conley of Hendersonville, NC and Denise (Clifton) Ashe of Charlotte, NC; sister Avalona (Allen) Long of Yuma, AZ; grandchildren: Tori, Jasmine, Keenan, Savannah, Kevin, and Christopher; great grandchildren: Jaquet and Naomi; nieces and nephews of AZ and CA: Mevelyn, Erahn, Nikki, Elvin Ray, Allen Jr, Don, numerous nieces and nephews of NC, as well as many additional relatives and friends across the country.
Norene dedicated her life to the Lord and lived by his word. For many years she served as a Sunday school teacher, senior choir member, and as a deaconess board member of Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Asheville, NC. In more recent years, she worshiped at New Bethel Baptist Church of Asheville, NC. She loved to have sing-alongs and worship the Lord. As a mother, she lived by example and dedicated her life to being the "best" mom. She provided the best experiences for her children growing up, as well as wonderful memories. Her huge smile and laughter were contagious. Her kindness, generosity, and strength were an inspiration to all that had the privilege to encounter such a beautiful soul.
We will miss our beloved mother, grandmother, protector, and best friend.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, September 11, 2020 in the chapel of Ray Funeral & Cremation Service. Public viewing will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at 1:00 pm at the WC Sate Veterans Cemetery. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all attendees must wear a face covering and practice social distancing protocols. The service will be live streamed via this website.
