Mary Jo Johnson, 90, passed away Thursday, March 4, 2021. She was born October 29, 1930 in Liberty, SC to the late Alfred and Tessie Arial Avery. She attended public schools in Liberty, SC before moving to Asheville, NC in 1946.
Mary Jo retired from the former Ebony Grill on Eagle St. after over 50 years of managing the restaurant. She was an active and devoted member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church for 62 years and served as a Bible School administrator. She enjoyed reading her Bible and daily spiritual guides, sitting on her porch, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren and the community youth.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by daughter, Deborah Ann Cannady and son-in-law, Robert Cannady; sister, Anna Barr Smith; granddaughter, Erica; great-granddaughter, Harmony; great-grandsons, Joe, Justin and Keithan; great-great grandson, Jeremiah.
Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Annette Arial, Jennifer Whiteside, Ernestine Sullivan; sons, Johnnie Johnson, Willie Johnson, Robert Johnson and Michael Johnson; sister, Dorothy Hansley of Hartford, CT; 17 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 27 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and special friends.
Public viewing will be from 1:00-6:00 pm Thursday, March 11, 2021 in the chapel of Ray Funeral & Cremation Service. Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Friday, March 12, 2021 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Violet Hill Cemetery.
