Mrs. Martha Jane Ramsuer Ligon, daughter of the late Christopher Columbus and Sarah Jane Carson Ramsuer, was born February 9, 1939 in Asheville, North Carolina. The Lord called her home on Sunday, December 8, 2019, surrounded by loving family and friends at her bedside.
Martha attended Asheville City Schools and was a graduate of Stephens-Lee High School. Class of 1957. She was a faithful member of the former Wilson Chapel United Methodist Church on Burton St., and served on several committees. Martha was a current member of St. James AME Church and served as an usher and member of the choir. She was a member of the City-Wide Usher Union for over 40 years and only missed the monthly first Sunday gathering when her health declined. She also sang on the usher union choir. Martha was a true prayer warrior and was often sought out by co-workers at Mars Manufacturing and Sonopress to pray with them, for a family member or other coworkers. She gave thanks for answered prayer requests to God. Her personal prayer, as she often stated, was for all family members to be saved, forgive and show love for one another. She also liked to cook, do word-find and jigsaw puzzles.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Otto Ligon; sons, Albert Ramsuer and John Henry Martin, Jr.; sister, Mary E. Gamble; brother, Robert Ramsuer, nephews, Marion, Melvin, and Howard Gamble; nieces, Phyllis Folston, and Frankie Mackey.
She leaves to cherish fond memories, daughter, Alice Jones, Asheville, sister, Tinia Gamble, Raleigh; grandchildren, Rochelle Whiteside (David) York, SC, Twana Johnson and Devin Jones, Asheville; special great-grandson that always made her laugh, Malachi Johnson; closest loyal friend, Sarah Hart; great-grandchildren, Terrance Ramsuer (Tamira Ramsuer) Raleigh,N.C., Keenan Whittenburg (special friend-Jessica Patton) Asheville, James Thompson and Kyana Thompson (Significant other, Kahlil) York, SC; nine great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, extended family and a community of friends.
