Linwood Louis Edwards, Sr., 94, born August 2, 1926 in Isle of Wight County, Smithfield Virginia, departed this life peacefully Sunday, May 23, 2021 at his home in Asheville, North Carolina. He was a resident of Asheville for the majority of his life. He was the son of the late Frederick Louis Edwards and Dinah Bailey Edwards.
He was a World War II Veteran, enlisted into the U.S. Army August 15, 1945. Linwood received the World War II Victory Medal, while serving as a Technician Fifth Grade, for the 558th Motor Ambulance Company.
In 1949 he became an employee of Armour & Company in Asheville as a Truck Driver. After 30 plus years he retired. Seeking to stay active, he worked as a Bank Courier for NCNB in Asheville NC, known today as Bank of America as a Bank Courier, retiring again in 1988.
Linwood was a lifelong member of St. John A. Baptist Church, Kenilworth Area of Asheville. He had the honor and privilege of serving as a loyal and dedicated Deacon. He was also church choir member. Linwood was a proud servant carrying out the work of God’s Ministry in any capacity, until health challenges prevented him from serving.
He had a passion for gardening, wine making and working on cars. His Northside neighborhood community of over 64+ years, called him “Daddy Lin or Papa Lin”, “Pops”, “Old Folk”, “Mr. Lin”, “Mr. Linwood” or “Mr. Edwards”. Being naturally curious, friendly, and approachable, he was always eager to start a conversation and share laughs with family, friends and strangers. He was particularly fond of relating events with relevant stories of the ‘good old days.’
His late wife, Jennie Elizabeth Wright Edwards, for 69 1/2 years affectionately called him “LL”.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sons Linwood Louis Edwards, Jr. and Oliver Edwards.
Surviving are his son, Ronald L. Edwards (Annette); daughter Diane Edwards Williams (Mark); five grandchildren, Linwood Oliver (LaKisha), Elizabeth Williams, Christina Edwards, Mark Williams Jr. and Adeja Allen; four great grandchildren, Tyshaun, Alisa, Simone and Jaylen; niece, Anna Catherine Woods (Ronald); nephews James Edgar Williams and Gregory Williams (Doris); cousins Ernest Lee Bailey of Windsor, VA and Ruby Wiggins (Milton) of Smithfield, VA; several great nieces and nephews; a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be 11:00 am Thursday, May 27, 2021 in the chapel of Ray Funeral & Cremation Service. Public viewing will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery. Repast will follow the burial in the Auxiliary Rooms at Ray Funeral & Cremation Service. To continue to ensure safety for all, face coverings are preferred.
