On Thursday morning, September 3, 2020, Joyce Roberts Crawford, 89, entered eternal rest at her daughter’s home in Charlotte, NC where she resided for the past 10 months.
Mrs. Crawford was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, November 15, 1930 to the late Edward and Mildred Coleman Roberts. At an early age, the family moved to Charlotte, NC. With her mother and siblings, she joined the Berean Seventh Day Adventist Church and completed her primary education in the church school. and would later complete her secondary education. Mrs. Crawford married the love of her life, James Jefferson (JJ) Crawford of Rains, SC on February 14, 1949 in Charlotte. From this union, they raised five beautiful children. In 1951, the family moved to Asheville, NC, where James (JJ) was employed as an agent in the newly formed branch of North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company.
After the children started school, Mrs. Crawford became self employed as a housekeeping technician until retirement. She became a faithful and active member of the Bethel SDA Church and served in numerous capacities including church treasurer (30 years), Sabbath school superintendent and teacher, adult choir director, senior ministries leader and treasurer of the North Carolina Senior Federation. From it’s inception, she was dedicated to the church’s food pantry program and loved serving members of the community. Mrs. Crawford’s love and faith in God radiated to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all who shared her home and kitchen table. They lovingly called her Mama, Mother, Granny, Big Granny, Grandma and more recently “Flipper”. She was a member and great neighbor of the Haw Creek Community for 50 yeas. Mrs. Crawford loved her various pets, bird feeding/watching, sewing, thrift shopping, singing, playing the piano, gardening, canning, freezing foods and good southern gospel music. She created a beautifully warm and inviting home and was an amazing baker and cook. Mrs. Crawford loved the Western North Carolina mountains, her community, her church, her family and most of all she Loved The Lord.
