Joseph Nathaniel Watkins, 81, answered his Master’s Call from earthly labor to eternal rest on Friday, January 15, 2021 at Pardee Hospital, Hendersonville, NC.
Joseph was born to the late Gladys E. Watkins in Henderson County on the 9th day of November 1939. Joseph was reared in a Christian home and at an early age was baptized and joined Star of Bethel Baptist Church, Hendersonville, NC. Joseph attended the former Ninth Avenue High School in Hendersonville and participated in many school related activities including football. He enjoyed playing softball, fishing and hunting. He was an avid sports fan of football, basketball, auto racing and boxing.
The summer after 8th Grade, Mary Helen Johnson of Laurens, SC moved to Hendersonville with her family. Joseph was one of the first people she met. One of the most joyous days of his life was the marriage to his sweetheart, Mary Helen Johnson. God blessed this union with three daughters, Deborah (Spanky), Carolyn (Carol), and Natalie (Yvonne). Joseph was a former employee of E.I Dupont in Brevard, NC and retired after more than 20 years of service.
In addition to his mother, Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Helen Johnson Watkins; brothers, Claude and Alexander Watkins; and a special couple that were like parents, Samuel and Janie Peacock.
Joseph leaves to cherish his memories, three loving and devoted daughters, Ms. Deborah L. Watkins, Hendersonville, Ms. Carolyn D. Watkins, Simpsonville, SC, and Mrs. Natalie Y. (James) Smith, Mills River, NC; grandson, Mr. Dymon Underwood, Hendersonville; siblings, Ms. Priscilla Watkins and Ms. Joyce Watkins Darden, Hendersonville, Mr. John E. (Phyllis) Watkins, Orlando, FL and Ms. Dorothy J. Watkins, Enfield, NC; sister-in-law, Ms. Dorothy J. Johnson, Cincinnati, OH; and a special friend, Ms. Sarah Henderson, Arden, NC; a host of nephews, nieces and friends.
