Herbert E. Porter Jr. was born on March 21, 1940 in Asheville, North Carolina and departed this life on March 14, 2021. He was the son of the late Herbert E. Porter, Sr. and Parthenia V. Porter. He was preceded in death by his son Herbert E. Porter III.
Mr. Porter was a graduate of Stephens-Lee High School Class of 1958. He then went on to attend North Carolina A&T State University and graduated with a degree in Biology. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. He also was a participant in the Greensboro marches during the Civil Rights era. He was very active in the NAACP and participated in the Sit -Ins in Greensboro, North Carolina during the 1960’s. He was an employee with the US Postal Service and retired after 40 year of service.
Since his early ages, Herbert was an avid health nutritionist constantly advising and aiding his family and friends on a healthy lifestyle. The family will definitely miss him during the holidays as this was a time that he would break away from his strict diet to indulge and enjoy the festivities.
Herbert lived in Washington, DC, Atlanta, Georgia and returned to Asheville, North Carolina later in life to be close to his family and friends. He leaves to cherish his memories his son, Antonio Carlos Porter; grandson Michael De'Shon Porter; great-granddaughter, Briana Cook; sister, Carolyn Porter King; nephew, Henry Columbus King Jr.; niece, Alisa King Griffin; childhood friend, Ira “Buster” Newble; and several cousins and friends.
Funeral service will be at 2:00 pm Saturday, March 20, 2021 in the chapel of Ray Funeral & Cremation Service. Public viewing will be one hour prior to the service. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, attendance will be limited to 50 people. Attendees must wear a face covering, sanitize hands and social distance.
