Gertrude Sloan Jiles, 82, born March 25,1938 and passed away Monday, November 30, 2020. She lived a full and blessed life and leaves behind a grand legacy.
She was born in Weaverville, NC to the late Haskell Lee and Ada Ophelia Brooks Sloan. Gertrude lived her whole life in Western North Carolina. Her work career includes serving others as a cafeteria assistant at South French Broad Middle School, Grove Park Inn and the former legendary S&W Cafeteria. Gertrude also worked manufacturing emblems for many organizations including NASA. She was employed at Mission Hospital as a housekeeper and took pride in providing clean and safe rooms for patients. She became a Certified Nursing Assistant and found joy in comforting and caring for those in the hospital and private homes. Gertrude retired in South Asheville and continued to care for others, including her mother, Ophelia Sloan. She enjoyed living in her home, hosting countless Sunday and holiday dinners and sharing with family. She will be missed dearly; was, is, and will always be loved.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Sloan; brother William “Bill” Sloan and sister, Mildred Sloan.
Surviving family to cherish her memory include daughters, Jacqueline Davis, Andrea Jiles, Sandra Jiles, Jamia Smith; sons, Eric Sloan, Jeffrey Jiles, Kenneth Jiles; sisters, Dorothy Byrd, Bertha Barnes, Willie Mae Patterson; 13 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; many other relatives and friends.
A public viewing will be from 2:00-7:00 pm Friday, December 4, 2020 in the chapel of Ray Funeral & Cremation Service. Funeral service will be 11:00 am Saturday, December 5, 2020 also in the chapel. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all attendees must wear a face covering and attendance will be limited to 50 people in order to comply with social distancing protocols.
