Dorothy Lewis Smith destined for the stars! Our light of joy departed this life on March 7, 2021, at the home of her daughter, Sherlyn S. Allen of natural causes. Dot, Treesie, or Dorothy, whichever name you called her, was born in Louisburg, NC (Franklin County) on April 12, 1917. Dorothy was raised on a large farmland in the small town, of Bunn, NC.  In 1947, Dorothy relocated to Asheville, NC with her husband Leonard.  Dorothy was lucky to have two sets of parents.  She was preceded in death by her loving parents Nalton and Estelle Edgerton Lewis and James and Susie Conyers.  She was also preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Leonard Smith; Sisters Emma Pace, Clemenda Neal; Brothers James Lewis, Oswald Conyers, James (JC) Conyers, and Thirlyn Conyers; Daughters, Phyphine Whitted, and Billie Doris Atkins; Son, Leonard (Forris) Smith, and Grandson, Robert Singleton.

Dorothy worked as a private duty Certified Nurse’s Aide for over 65 years.  Dorothy was active in various organizations. She participated in the Master Mason’s Daughter of Heroines of Jericho, Asheville City Negro Women’s Federation Club, Eastern Stars, Nazareth First Missionary Baptist Church Usher board, and a host of other organizations. Among her many acknowledgements Dorothy and Leonard were honored as the oldest active members of Nazareth First Missionary Baptist Church, where she was further recognized for completing church study courses, supporting Vacation Bible School, supporting Women’s Week of Prayer and numerous other events. Dorothy was also recognized as Grandmother of the of the Year.

Dorothy loved cooking for her family and was known for keeping a stash of junk food in her home. She was a true junk food junkie.  Dorothy also, had a dressing style of her own, which contributed to her remarkable appearance which was uniquely her own. These impeccable outfits often included one of her famous hats.

Surviving and left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Sherlyn Allen (Willie) of Hampton GA., Jonnie Robertson of Asheville, NC; three sisters, Doris C. Alston of Raleigh, NC, Maxine Teamer of Asheville, NC, and Pearl Wilson (Thomas) of New Jersey; and one brother, Henry Conyers of Bunn, NC; nine grandchildren, Dwight Allen of Durham, NC, Rodney Allen (Denise) of Fort Mitchell, AL, Travis Allen (Eunice) of McDonough, GA, Dr. Sharif Muhammad (Dequandra) of McDonough, GA, Bahija Robertson of Rochester, NY, Crystal Crippen of Gastonia, NC, Jamal Atkins of Bronx, NY, LaTasha Whitted of Arden, NC and Tijuana “ Tina “ Whitted of Raleigh, NC.  Twenty great grandchildren, Jamaal Jr, Sayquan, Tyrele, Nadezah, Taja, Dasani, Nicholla, Dejour, Arianna, Azarious, Breon, Imani, Nia, Arayah, Sharif II, Dillon, Laila, Khadia, Kajuan, and Kionne. Seven great-great-grandchildren, Zuri, Zeaunte Jr., Nicholas, Milan, Elijah, Amari, and Ashton.

A visitation with the family will be held from 4:00-6:00 pm Monday, March 22, 2021 in the chapel of Ray Funeral & Cremation Service.
