Connie Rena Freeman 67, of Asheville, North Carolina passed away Thursday, June 24, 2021 at Stonecreek Health & Rehabilitation. Connie was born in Bat Cave, North Carolina on May 27, 1954 to the late John Newbern Freeman Jr. and Rena Davidson Freeman.
She joined Catawba View Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. As a young adult, she attended McDowell High School and worked at Collins & Aikman in her hometown of Old Fort. Connie later relocated to South Carolina where she married and continued growing her family. She eventually found her way back to the mountains where she made Asheville her permanent home. Connie was employed at Econo Lodge for a number of years where she honed her gift for cleaning and organizing and developed a work family that she never forgot. Upon her return to NC, she became a devoted member of God’s Filling Station Full Gospel Church, where she served as a supportive grandmotherly and sisterly figure to her congregation and community. She expressed her love of children through babysitting and mentoring other parents, who endearingly titled her “the potty training expert”. She shared her love for Christ and joy of sharing the gospel by ensuring that the church bus was filled with neighborhood kids for Sunday service and Vacation Bible School. Often referred to as “Mama Connie” or “Nah-Nah”. Connie lived what many would describe as a simple life. Her pleasures in life came from reading, studying her bible scriptures & devotions, solving word search puzzles, spending time with family, talking on the phone, and watching her favorite TV shows and movies. She had a great memory; she remembered everyone’s birthday and phone number. Connie had a heart of gold. She will be remembered for her generosity, selflessness, compassion, and kindness towards everyone she met. Connie’s circle of friends and loved ones are boundless, and she’ll be greatly missed by many.
She is survived by four children: Melanie Freeman of Asheville, NC, Anthony Dawkins (LaToya) of Columbia, SC, Kendrick Dawkins of Asheville, NC, Kendra Dawkins of Charlotte, NC. Three siblings: Jeffrey Freeman of Old Fort, NC, Johnny Freeman (Brenda) of Bronx NY, and Vicki Freeman Bost (Noel) of Greensboro, NC. Thirteen grandchildren: Tatyanna Freeman, Tyra Tiare Blac, Marques Fair Jr., Immani Reese, Montel Reese, Anthony Dawkins Jr., Aiden Dawkins, Jaydon Dawkins, Londyn Dawkins, Railyn Dawkins, Jamille Jeter, Tarhia Hammond, Taniah Hammond; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones.
