Wallace Lee Dawkins, Jr., 96, of the Shiloh community of Asheville, died Monday, August 26, 2019.
Mr. Dawkins was born June 6, 1923 to the late Essie Logan and Wallace Dawkins. For the most part, he lived in Buncombe County his entire life. Due to his advanced age and the need for more consistent care, Mr. Dawkins lived with his daughter during the last year of his life. On June 6 of this year, Mr. Dawkins commemorated the 70th anniversary of his time serving in the U.S. Army where he was a part of the 5th wave of the Normandy invasion during World War II.
Mr. Dawkins was a long-time employee and retiree from two Asheville landmarks: Asheville Country Day School and The Grove Park Inn. Always the avid golfer, he played golf at least once a week into his mid-80s. In most recent years, he enjoyed nothing more than sitting outside with the sun on his face. He was a long-time member of New Mount Olive Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by all of his siblings: Martha Johnson, Joseph Greenlee, Martha Williams and William Greenlee.
Surviving are his daughter, Carmelita Dawkins Marrow, son-in-law Dennis Marrow; grandchildren, Shani Marrow and Akil Marrow; stepdaughters, Bonita Woods and Waunea Morrison; nephews, Tyrone Greenlee and Michael Greenlee; cousin, Albert Lee Burgin; other relatives and friends.
