Viola Wilkes, 95, passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at The Oaks at Sweeten Creek. She was born February 28, 1924 in Ninety Six, SC to the late Sam Benjamin and Ella Henderson Benjamin.
Viola was a faithful member of Bethel Seventh Day Adventist Church and served as a Deaconess and Head Usher. She was a member of the Senior Choir, Dorcas Club and Senior Progressive Club. Viola worked as a domestic housekeeper. She enjoyed cooking and was known for her delicious yeast rolls and her famous “Rainbow Cake.” She also enjoyed entertaining family and friends, walking, gardening, and saving coins, especially dimes.
In addition to her parents, Viola was preceded in death by her husband, Julius Wilkes; sisters, Mozelle Giles, Annie Bell Radden, Willie Mae Pope, Pearl Marshall, Ella Mae Smith, and Elizabeth Johnson; brothers, Samuel Benjamin and Rudolph Benjamin.
Left to cherish her memory are sons, Alvin Wilkes (Beverly) of Asheville, NC, Julius Wilkes Jr. of Asheville, NC, Shuley Wilkes of Asheville, NC, and Jimmie Lee Wilkes (Penny) of Fort Lauderdale, FL; ten grandchildren; many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Family and public visitation will be from 1:00-3:00 pm Saturday, December 7, 2019 at the chapel of Ray Funeral & Cremation Service. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Sunday, December 8, 2019 at Bethel Seventh Day Adventist Church. Urn burial will be at 10:00 am Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at the WC State Veterans Cemetery.
