Obituary

TONEY , 98, OF HENDERSONVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA, WAS BORN APRIL 12, 1921, IN EDNEYVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA, TO THE LATE ELLEN LAWS. TONEY WAS REARED BY HIS GRANDMOTHER WHOM HE ADORED AND CHERISHED. HE OFTEN SHARED MEMORIES OF HER AND HOW HE HATED TO LEAVE HER WHEN HE WAS DRAFTED INTO THE MILITARY.

AT THE AGE OF 21, TONEY JOINED THE MILITARY AND WAS AN ARMY WORLD WAR II VETERAN. HE WAS HONORABLY DISCHARGED OCTOBER 31, 1945, AS A PRIVATE FIRST CLASS. WHILE IN THE ARMY TONEY SERVED IN THE 389TH ENGINEER BATTALION. IN ADDITION, WHILE IN THE SERVICE TONEY TOURED NORTHERN FRANCE, RHINELAND (GERMANY), ARDENNES (BELGIUM) AND CENTRAL EUROPE. HE WAS AWARDED THE EAMET CAMPAIGN MEDAL WITH 4 BRONZE STARS.

ON OCTOBER 21, 1943, TONEY MARRIED HIS CHILDHOOD FRIEND GENEVA WHITESIDE OF EDNEYVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA, WHO PRECEDED HIM IN DEATH. THE STORY IS TOLD THAT THE TWO OF THEM JUMPED ON A TRAIN AND ELOPED TO GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA, WHILE HER KID SISTER (CLARA) WATCHED IN DISBELIEF AND THEY WERE WED. TO THIS UNION ONE CHILD WAS BORN WHO DIED SHORTLY AFTER BIRTH. TONEY AND GENEVA WERE INSEPARABLE AND WERE MARRIED FOR OVER 67 YEARS. THIS WAS TRUE LOVE.

AFTER BEING DISCHARGED FROM THE SERVICE, TONEY AND GENEVA SETUP RESIDENCE IN WASHINGTON DC, WHERE HE WAS A LICENSED CHAUFFEUR. AFTER LIVING THERE FOR SEVERAL YEARS, THEY MOVED TO CLEVELAND, OHIO, WHERE THEY RESIDED FOR OVER 35 YEARS. WHILE IN CLEVELAND, TONEY WORKED FOR RAYCO, WHERE HE LEARNED THE TRADE OF INSTALLING SEAT COVERS. TONEY AND HIS WIFE (GENEVA) WOULD LATER RETURN TO NORTH CAROLINA TO BECOME THE CAREGIVER OF HIS UNCLE AND AUNT, THE LATE CONWAY AND ALICE MCADAMS. WHEN RETURNING TO NORTH CAROLINA TONEY AND HIS WIFE JOINED FELLOWSHIP WITH BLUE RIDGE BAPTIST CHURCH OF EDNEYVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA. TONEY WAS A FAITHFUL MEMBER AND THIS IS WHERE HE TRULY DEVELOPED HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. TONEY SERVED AS A MEMBER OF THE MALE CHORUS AND HAD A SPECIAL AFFECTION FOR REV. PEA AND HIS FAMILY.

TONEY HAD A LOVE FOR CARS AND EVERYONE THAT KNEW HIM WAS AWARE OF HIS STRONG AFFECTION FOR AUTOMOBILES. ANY CAR THAT HE OWNED YOU KNEW THAT IT WAS ALWAYS GOING TO BE SPOTLESS AND OF COURSE SHINING LIKE NEW MONEY. IN ADDITION TO HIS LOVE OF CARS, HE LOVED GARDENING. THERE WAS NOT A YEAR THAT WENT PAST THAT HE DIDN’T HAVE A GARDEN IN HIS BACKYARD. TONEY WAS VERY METICULOUS  ABOUT HIS LAWN, UP UNTIL THE AGE OF 97, HE COULD STILL BE FOUND RIDING HIS MOWER AND CUTTING HIS OWN GRASS.

TONEY WAS A MAN OF GREAT DETERMINATION AND VERY STRONG WILLED. HE WAS ONE THAT WOULD SPEAK HIS MIND. HE WAS RESILIENT AND SHOWED THIS BY THE FACT THAT HE LIVED ON HIS OWN UNTIL HE WAS NO LONGER ABLE TO DO SO. TONEY, A VERY INDEPENDENT MAN, WAS STILL COOKING AND FIXING HIS OWN MEALS.

TONEY DEPARTED THIS LIFE SATURDAY MORNING AND LEAVES TO MOURN HIS DEATH HIS NIECES AND NEPHEWS; DORETHEA RHYM (ROBERT), CATHERINE HUNTER (CLARENCE), ARTHUR J. MCCRIMAGER, LARRY E. MCCRIMAGER, JOYCE MCDONALD, ALL OF CLEVELAND, OHIO; STERLING D. OWENS OF SACREMENTO CALIFORNIA, GARY OWENS OF MYRTLE BEACH, SOUTH CAROLINA, AND A HOST OF GREAT NIECES AND GREAT NEPHEWS, FAMILY AND FRIENDS. A SPECIAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AND THANKS GO TO SHIRLEY RUSSELL DAVIS, WHOM HE ADORED FOR HER ASSISTANCE IN HIS CARE DURING HIS FINAL DAYS. HER KINDNESS GOES BEYOND MAJOR.

THE FAMILY WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE FOR YOUR KIND EXPRESSIONS AND CONDOLENCES DURING THIS TIME OF SADNESS. IN ADDITION, THEY WOULD LIKE TO THANK ANYONE THAT PROVIDED SERVICES FOR OUR LOVED ONE AT SOME POINT DURING HIS ELDERLY YEARS. PERSONAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS WILL BE MADE AT A LATER DATE.
